A student received a call with the caller ID displaying "Brotman Hall" and coming from the number 562-985-5471. Believing it was a legitimate university communication, the student answered the call. It's important to note that calls from an actual CSULB office number would not display building names.
The caller, who identified herself as Jessica, proceeded to inform the student that there were issues with certain documents the student had submitted to the university. The caller claimed that law enforcement was involved, and to avoid arrest, the student was instructed to pay a specific amount of money. The caller possessed personal details about the student, including her name, address, and GPA.
When the student questioned the legitimacy of the call, the scammer became defensive and made threats, including threats to share the call recording with the entire university, affecting the student’s grades, and threatening arrest. The scammer used offensive language and insults.
Message Intent
This type of scam is like a ransom threat that is intended to scare the individual into paying money.
